Kala
By Colin Walsh
Kala was a fantastic read. We seem to gravitate towards Irish reads at the moment, and this was another great one. Told through the very distinct voices of three friends, this thriller, really, keeps you guessing until the end. What happened to Kala? As the characters are brought back together 15 years after Kala’s disappearance, the novel switches between the past and present to piece the puzzle together and also examine how choices, family and a sense of place can shape lives. This book was recommended to me and I would definitely recommend it on again!
I loved the way Walsh created distinct voices for the three characters he tells the story through, this was a major tick for me. Helen sounds like a writer, Mush’s voice is relaxed and lethargic at times and Joe is in the second person so that we are with him on his troubled journey.
There are also so many things the reader wants to know from the beginning and so many possibilities teeter on the edge of possibility as you read, that you cannot help but keep the pages turning.
